A 45-year-old man was allegedly attacked and killed by a group of men in the Samaypur Badli area outside Delhi. Police said the accused assaulted him with a cooking cylinder and slit his throat after he refused to repay a 500 rupee loan. They arrested two of the defendants, police said.

The deceased, identified as Rajbeer Singh, worked as a ragpicker. His family said he had also worked as a contract worker with the MCD before.

Police say the man was killed by his friends after refusing to return Rs 500. He took the loan about 2-3 months ago.

Delhi police said they have arrested two of the accused and are investigating the case. On Saturday, they received a call from a local who informed them of a body lying near a canal in Samaypur Badli. A team rushed to the scene and found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with head and neck injuries.

“We sent the body for an autopsy and sent informants to identify the man. He was later identified as Rajbeer. A case of murder has been recorded and surveillance cameras near his house have been scanned and analysed,” said DCP (Outernorth) Brijendra Yadav.

The police discovered that Rajbeer was living alone. He is survived by his wife and their two children but the family lives in another house.

During the investigation, two of the accused were identified and arrested. Both, Bobby (23) and Ramniwas (27) are residents of Aligarh and had come to the area in search of employment.

Police said they recovered the weapon used in the offence. Questioning of the defendants revealed that they had an argument with Rajbeer the night of the incident. All were drinking alcohol and fighting over money, police said.

“They were sitting in a room and the fight escalated after Rajbeer refused to repay the loan of Rs 500 immediately. Bobby had lent him the amount,” an officer said.

According to the police, during the scuffle, the men came out and picked up a cooking cylinder which was outside and allegedly hit the victim on the head with it. They then allegedly slit his throat with a blade. To evade arrest, they cleared the area and dumped the body near a canal.
