Barcelona CANNOT sign Ferran Torres until the cash-strapped Catalans slash their payroll … and Xavi suggests his ‘spectacular’ new signing of £ 55million could be available if Ousmane Dembele accepts a pay cut

  • Barcelona can’t save Ferran Torres due to financial difficulties
  • The 21-year-old has joined the La Liga giants in a £ 55million deal with Manchester City
  • However, La Liga salary cap rules mean the Spaniard is yet to register
  • Xavi says Ousmane Dembele accepting pay cut could improve situation

Barcelona are unable to register another £ 55million signing with Ferran Torres until the cash-strapped LaLiga club slash their sizable payrolls, Xavi admitted.

Torres, 21, joined the Catalans from Manchester City this month in a mega-money operation, with new boss Xavi desperate for reinforcements in advance after Sergio Aguero retires.

However, the Spaniard is unable to feature for the club as he is not yet registered as the club are struggling with La Liga salary cap rules.

Xavi considered the matter, hoping his new “spectacular” signing will play for his side soon enough.

“Ferran Torres is a spectacular signing, both as a player and as a person,” he said via Goal.

“He’s coming out of a major injury, he’s got a fantastic start, he’s going to give us a lot, I have no doubts. He can play in different positions, I’m very happy with the club’s efforts to get him. ‘

Xavi said the club will have to offload players in order to free up the payroll. Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti are linked with Premier League transfers this month.

The Barca boss has also suggested that Ousmane Dembele could help Torres sign up. The Frenchman is negotiating a new deal, his current contract expiring this summer, and Xavi has called on the winger to agree to a pay cut.

“We will see how the salary cap situation is, if it is possible right away. There must be some players leaving. If we get Dembele to re-sign his contract and lower his salary, that will allow us to sign Torres and we hope that can happen, ”he added.

Barcelona announced last year that their debts had reached over £ 1billion, with their difficult financial situation seeing Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba undergo pay cuts.

Earlier this week it was reported that talks between Dembele and Barca collapsed due to the Frenchman being unhappy with the club pleading poverty while being linked with a mega money move for Erling Haaland.

Haaland, 21, has been linked with Real Madrid, Man City and Bayern Munich, and his agent Mino Raiola has named Barca as an option for his client.

The Borussia Dortmund star will be available for a reduced price of £ 64million, but Marca claimed on Wednesday that a five-year deal could total up to £ 400million, when the salaries and commissions of Raiola and her father, Alf-Inge, are factored in.
