Margao: An imperceptible difference in the columns of revenue and expenditure of the municipality of Margao worries the newly elected president. The municipality spends nearly Rs 2.5 crores every month on worker wages, garbage collection, daily wages and other expenses. However, the revenue deposited in the municipality’s safe is much lower than its total expenditure. President Damodar Shirodkar, who took office last week, has decided to prioritize reducing MMC’s spending and increasing its revenue.

After taking charge, Shirodkar held several meetings with various departments of the municipality. Meetings with the Revenue, Accounts, and Tax departments revealed uncontrolled spending on various things, loosely referred to as “other expenses.” Of the 2.5 crore rupees, about 1.5 crore rupees are spent on staff salaries, pension funds and remuneration of advisers. About Rs 38 lakh is distributed as wages to day laborers. Another Rs 30 lakh is spent on door-to-door garbage collection, and surprisingly, a whopping Rs 30 lakh is disbursed as other expenses.

The exact nature of “other expenses” has yet to be determined, and the President is investigating this issue carefully. He should also carry out a detailed verification of the daily wages paid to the workers. The President plans to increase the revenue from the commercial capital of the South Goa Municipality, through various means. Recovering arrears is also on the priority list, sources say.

This analysis of the MMC accounts comes in the wake of the municipality expressing its lack of funds to carry out various tasks, including the establishment of a kabrastan and the installation of CCTV cameras, among others.
