Knox Once Again Ranked in Washington Monthly’s Top 50 U.S. Colleges and Universities
A Decade of Excellence: Knox Recognized Among America’s Research and Service Institutions
Washington Monthly magazine once again ranked Knox College among best american colleges: No. 39 overall among 215 liberal arts colleges in the United States and No. 1 among liberal arts colleges in Illinois. This is the 10th consecutive year that Knox has made the top 50. The ranking reflects the College’s “contribution to the public good” in terms of supporting and promoting social mobility, student research and public service.
In writing the guide, Washington Monthly gives equal weight to each of the three broad categories – community and national service, social mobility and research – and takes into account several factors within each category.
- The civil service takes into account factors such as the proportion of alumni serving in the Peace Corps and institutional support for community service projects. Knox ranked # 15 in this category.
- Social mobility takes into account factors such as each institution’s eight-year graduation rate, percentage of Pell scholarship recipients, percentage of first-generation students, affordability, and future earnings. Knox ranked # 61 in this category.
- Research takes into account factors such as the proportion of alumni earning a doctorate and the total amount of an institution’s research expenditure. Knox ranked # 79 in this category.
Knox has also been named as one of the “Best bang for the buck” colleges in the magazine’s 2021 College Guide and Rankings, which is awarded to schools that “help non-wealthy students achieve marketable degrees at affordable prices.”
