How much does it feel if I leave my car for 1 week? Exactly this question I have asked myself and just tried it out. I was particularly interested in the financial side, to see what positive impact it could have on your own wallet and at the same time show you that it makes sense not to always have to use your car for each way.

    The preparation

You want to try it yourself? If you want to leave your car for a week, please remember that the vehicle will not be available to you during purchases during this time. Therefore, it is highly recommended if you make a wholesale purchase in advance . Park your car on a public road, so pay attention to possible temporary parking bans. Furthermore, it is important to remember that your paths take a little longer in time.

My savings in this one week

As a rule, I drive about 300 kilometers in a week by car. Since I was traveling all the time on foot and planned my way better, my covered distance was about 100 kilometers.

My car consumes 8.5 liters of Super plus per 100 kilometers (€ 1.58 per liter), saving you € 13.43. On this savings, I can count on about 5 euros of saved wear and thus this total savings amount to 18.43 euros.

Why is the distance shorter on foot? Those who walk through their city often have the great advantage of direct routes. If we drive with our cars, we are dependent on the road and this is often longer. Hereby, one or two kilometers can be added.

Leave your car often, it’s worth it

    Leave your car

The savings of 18.43 euros may not seem like much at first glance, but let’s imagine that we would only drive the 100 kilometers less each month. The savings would thus already be 184.30 euros per year.

It should also be considered in terms of wear and tear costs that in the long run you can sometimes even save one or the other workshop visit, which can be not only a financial, but also a time saving.

In the total cost you would actually have to include the parking fees. Calculated over the year, so additional euros are likely to come together.

The bill goes a bit further. Another factor is the annual mileage that you travel with your car. This is very important for the calculation of your contribution to car insurance.

The insurers use a mileage scale for this purpose. For example, it can make a significant difference if you drive 16,000 kilometers a year or just 15,000 kilometers. Sometimes the savings can be up to 200 Euro per year and maybe the saved 1,200 kilometers contribute to that.

My tip: I find interesting the offer of some insurance companies, which offer their customers a so-called mileage bill. As a customer, you pay per kilometer driven and no pure estimated flat rate more. Such an offer I found, among others, at FRIDAY.

    The positive side effect

    positive side

Of course, those who walk are also doing something good for their own health. The body is more in motion, which is good for your own fitness and at the same time can help reduce stress. Not for nothing many physicians recommend running at least 10,000 steps a day, which is about 5 kilometers. Maybe you will discover your city completely over time.

My tip: An often underestimated point are the really many small ways and also the ways, which one does not travel by car, but entrusts other people with it.

The best example of this is the delivery service. Is not it really possible to pick up the pizza right in the pizzeria instead of having it delivered? Especially if it is within a radius of 2 to 3 kilometers? Incidentally, one would have already burned a portion of the kilocalories again.

Summary – Leave a car, how much money do you save?

I have tried it myself and the savings can be seen. Try it out for yourself, maybe you will find pleasure in often leaving your car behind. Do not forget that many more positive side effects can occur along the way.

    Monthly Income and Expenses

To say a fixed percentage would not be correct in my opinion. Why? Each of us has a different monthly income and the expenses are different. Thus, the percentage would be different for each of us. Let’s say that we use 10% of our income…
