Tesla will cover travel costs for employees wishing to have an abortion
Tesla released its 2021 “Impact Report” last week, by sharing, they will cover travel expenses for employees traveling out of state for abortions. The company’s new health insurance offerings include “travel and accommodation assistance for those who may need to seek health services that are not available in their home country.”
The announcement comes after the Supreme Court last week disclosed a draft opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade. The electric car company last year moved its headquarters from Silicon Valley to Texas, which bans abortions at around 6 weeks of pregnancy. Briscoe Cain, a Republican representative from the state of Texas, says he would propose legislation preventing local governments in the Lone Star State from doing business with companies offering trips to employees who have abortions.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it would mean individual states can restrict access to safe abortions.
Last week, US Senator Marco Rubio introduced a bill that would prevent companies from claiming tax deductions on abortion-related expenses.
The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, tweeted in September: “Government should rarely impose its will on the people and in doing so should aspire to maximize their cumulative happiness. That said, I would prefer to stay out of politics.
Tesla has joined major companies such as Amazon, Apple, DoorDash, Lyft in offering travel benefits to employees seeking abortions.
